Healthy Holidays

aka How to Not Fall Off the Wagon (too much!)

The travelling time of year doesn’t mean you have to leave healthy habits at home.

Here are ideas that might work for you.

If you are staying with folk who do not share your eating priorities, there are a couple of ways to manage this. Consider letting your hosts know as soon as possible if there’s anything you can’t eat. Be prepared to compromise: make a list of what’s really important and what’s not quite so important. Go over the list. Go over it again. They probably already know you have ‘odd’ eating habits so may be prepared to accommodate some variety. If your host does ask, perhaps you could offer to send a couple of (easy) recipes – problem identified (you were asked), solution suggested (you provided alternatives).
Say you will bring food contributions.
Arrange to share meal preparation.
It probably doesn’t matter too much to have white bread instead of whole meal or conventional chicken instead of free range, for a short period of time.
Tip #1 Choose your battles wisely. This is not the right time to convince your host of a better way of eating.
Tip #2 Practice grace.
Tip #3 Be the (silent) walking advertisement.
Take a probiotic such as InLiven. If you’re travelling overseas this is important. Having a gut ready for the inevitable exposure to less-than-optimum food and preparation practices is preventative action. This advice is not only for developing countries, either!
When travelling I also take Body Balance, a liquid supplement that will easily plug any nutritional gaps when I can’t be in control of my food. For overseas travel it is available as a powder.
Take a green powder such as Deep Green Alkalising Powder that can easily be added to a juice or water. Especially if you are used to eating lots of greens.
Do an internet search for Juice Bars, health food shops and cafes. Do this before you leave home.
Prunes, in case you are not served the fibre your body is accustomed to. You might be practicing grace but you can’t send an email to your gut to advice it of impending change.

Personal Blender

Personal Blender. Fantastic for motels, hostels, holiday homes/bachs. I have taken my Vita-Mix on holiday but it’s heavy and takes too much room. The PB is great for single smoothies, grinding nuts to butter, breadcrumbs, coffee beans, etc. Brilliant device.
Choose healthy options when you’re out
Take your own snacks and surreptitious nibbles. You can choose smaller portions at a meal table and know you won’t be hungry. Raw bars, nuts, dried fruit, fresh fruit and vegetable snacks.
Drink water! This sounds like a Captain Obvious statement but with a change of routine it is easy to forget to drink as much as you usually do.
If the food you eat (or don’t eat) is going to cause a rift, then seriously consider staying in a motel/hotel and spend the day with your friends and family.

Note : most products above can be purchased here.

Anyone else have some good ideas for ‘travelling healthy’?

Why I Am a Raw Food Consultant

You know what I do, but do you know why? Have I told you?

Early this week I was asked this. It’s often the ‘what’ we tell people about but it’s the ‘why’ that’s really important.

My first answer would be because I saw what more raw food did for me. I had more energy, lost weight and felt more alert than I can remember feeling.

The second answer, no less important than the first, is because I see what more raw food has done and keeps doing for my clients and customers. They have the similar stories to mine and also a variety of health-changing and wellness tales, too.

I have a certainty that more raw food can delivers what it promises, and the benefits can be life-changing in all realms: physical, mental and spiritual.

And there, Dear Readers, is my ‘why’.

Real food, real results.

I am passing on to you a Christmas Present from Karen Knowler, 12 Days of Raw Christmas. Definitely worth a visit.

Next week I shall blog about Travelling Healthy, with tips to keep you on track during your holiday season.

This week I leave you with the GoMoreRaw Gift Guide. Ask about our Gift Wrap and Card Service, too.

Have a fabulous week!

Christmas Ideas

I love it when fringe knowledge becomes more accepted by mainstream papers and their readers. In one of our national papers yesterday is this article: ‘Superfoods You Didn’t Know About’. The writer is presumptuous in assuming my lack of knowledge but I admit there’s a couple there I hadn’t heard of.

Are you still thinking about what to give as gifts this year? Me, too.

Consider the following list and know you are giving not only health but the food suggestions are all fair trade, too. Double bonus points.

1. Joy to the World, Christmas and Summer Raw Food Class, 30 November.
Give a ticket to your friend, daughter, son or parent. Consider buying one
for yourself and enjoy the afternoon together. Tickets are $120.
2. Chocolate – raw and fair trade **change prices on site
3. Coffee or Tea – fair trade and organic
4. Herbal Teas – New Zealand grown ** 30g $19.90
5. Organic Reflect Outdoor Balm (sunblock) and Body Cream.
www.christinesmith.mionegroup.com This is my Independent Rep site
6. Organic Body Care. Same site as #5 above.
7. Superfoods, eg maca, mesquite, InLiven
8. Personal Blender
9. Starter Packs – choose from Smoothie or Sweet Treats.
10.Consultation – The Raw Foundations Package. Get started with confidence
and fast track your way to a higher raw life.
11.Spiraliser
12.Juicer
13.Vita-Mix
14.Dehydrator

Free courier (NZ only) on the above for all of November.

Easiest Food Changes From Less Cooked to More Raw

What are the easiest changes to make first as one transitions to eating more raw food and less cooked?

This week I had the pleasure and privilege of speaking to a Rotary group and that was one of the questions asked of me.

Before I tell you what my answer was, I’d like to remind you to make your reservation for my Christmas and summer raw food class, 30 November, Joy to the World.

All bookings made this week will receive a free Coconut Nectar, 250g. This is used in many sweet recipes and is a good alternative to agave syrup. Valued at $10.90.

Back to the question I answered: My opinion was to start with three areas: salad dressings, smoothies and sweet treats.

Salad dressings are a good way to start because it can be the difference between you and your family eating a salad willingly or struggling through it.

The problem with shop bought dressings is that they usually have sugar, hydrogenated fats, preservatives and ‘numbers’ included. Not exactly ideal to top a healthy salad with.

The prospect of eating a naked salad is also unappealing to most, including me. A selection of raw dressings that are healthy, taste good and are easy to make will mean eating salads in your house will be food gold.

This week I give you the raw current favourite in our household: Honey Mustard Dressing. See below.

The second recommendation I gave was smoothies. If you have a blender, a blender stick or food processor you will be able to create smoothies. These liquid meals are versatile and an efficient way to include a range of fruits, greens, superfoods and good oils in one delicious ‘go’.

Today’s lunchtime smoothie included, banana, berries, milk, coconut oil, honey, maca powder, chia seeds and hemp flakes. It super powered me through the afternoon. If I’d included a few greens or a green powder, it would’ve been even better.

As you can see, there is plenty of room to mix and match whatever fruits, superfood and liquid you would prefer and, frankly, what you have on hand.Last suggestion was sweet treats. Most folk have a sweet tooth. If this isn’t you then this option might be so-so on your scale of food priorities. However, the chances are pretty good that some in your family and circle of friends may well appreciate a healthy, raw sweet treat.

At Rotary the other night, I demonstrated Chocolate, Cherry and Macadamia Balls. Easy, delicious and very good for you.I’ll put the recipe up in the Recipe Section on my website soon so check that if you would like to give then a whirl.

Honey Mustard Dressing
¼ c raw honey
2/5 c extra virgin olive oil (2/5 c is just over ¼ c)
¼ c ready-made mustard of your choice**
¼ c apple cider vinegar (I use Waihi Bush)
1 ½ t Himalayan salt

Blend together until thick and keep in fridge. Will keep for around two weeks.
**Try to choose a mustard that doesn’t use preservatives.

This recipe will vary in flavour depending on what type of honey you use, the flavour of your favourite olive oil and of course, what type of mustard you choose.

The Simple Detox Pack

Spring is the ideal time of year for a Spring Clean. I’m encouraging you to an internal spring clean that will have you sparkling on the outside as well as the ‘inside’.

Includes 1 x Kidney Cleanse Tea, 30g
  1 x Liver Cleanse Tea, 30g
1 x Superfood MiVitality Challenge Pack (10 day supply)
      – Deep Green Alkalising Powder
- Berry Radical Antioxidant Powder
- InLiven Probiotic Powder

The Simple Detox Pack is $149 and I will send you instructions on how to best use the Cleansing Teas and super food powders.

This is for ten days and here are some snippets of advice to help it go well.
Plan as many salads and other raw foods for the cleansing week as you can.
Drink water regularly.
To (hopefully) avoid a detox headache, you can have a tea or coffee each day. However, some people prefer not to have caffeine during a cleanse.
It is okay to include one small serving of meat, egg or cheese per day. If you prefer to be vegan during the detox you can include a small amount of extra raw nuts to help keep you satisfied.
Don’t go hungry! If you feel peckish, eat a banana or make a small smoothie.

This is the Simple Detox Pack so there is some DIY to do: choose which salads, smoothies and juices you would like to have. The ‘rawer’ you are, the more you will accentuate the effect of the Cleanse Teas and superfood powders.

I’m starting mine next week. Who’s going to join me?

(The Deluxe Detox Pack is coming soon. It will have a complete meal plan and my input to help you not only succeed in your Deluxe Detox week but to enjoy it. I’m still putting the finishing touches to it.)

Next week: The Death of the Raw Food Diet – as posted by one of the sites I subscribe to. I have been open that I am not and do not promote an ‘all or nothing’ raw food diet. This article explores this from a long-term raw-foodist and why he now includes some cooked food. A short period of time is ideal for 100% (such as a Detox or Cleanse) or for a longer time but not often ‘forever’. I will discuss this more next week.

Vanilla and Mesquite Truffles

Another version of raw truffles has become my latest favourite sweet treat. It features mesquite powder which has a delightful caramel hint. It also has a good protein count, making it a good option for protein smoothies. It also contains “good quantities of calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron and zinc, and is rich in the amino acid lysine as well.” It can be partnered easily with maca and cacao powder. (read more here)

So without further ado here is the recipe for…

Vanilla and Mesquite Truffles
250g macadamia nuts or cashew nuts or combination. You need a creamy nut.
500g pitted fresh dates – soak if not soft
1 vanilla bean ground or 1 t vanilla essence
1 ½ T mesquite powder
coconut
Sour Cherries (optional)

1. Grind macadamia nuts in food processor, until like breadcrumbs.
2. Drain dates and add with food processor along with ground vanilla bean or essence, mesquite and dates. Process again until the mixture forms a ball.
3. Roll into small balls using your hands and roll in mesquite or coconut.
4. Variation: 1/8 c sour cherries – depending on the size of your truffles, bury one or two sour cherries in the middle, or chop roughly and add to mix just before it starts to make a ball. You want the sour cherries to feature as little bits of ‘kick’ not get lost it in the mix.

Based on an idea from rawpleasure.com.au but I have ‘kiwi-ised’ it.

I have put the sour cherries, coconut and mesquite powder into a Starter Pack and discounted it by 10% for this week (NZ only). Was $44.68; now $39.95. This pack is enough for approximately 7 – 10 batches.
Yes, I know the truffle looks lost and lonely on its plate but I also told you that they were my new favourites and, it was my very last one. Time to make another batch.

It seems mesquite is a good superfood for diabetics to use: “Researchers report that mesquite is highly effective in balancing blood sugar. The natural sweetness in the pods - which comes from fructose - and the high rate of dietary fibre - pods are 25% fibre - causes the nutrients in mesquite to be absorbed slowly preventing ups and downs in blood sugar levels. With a low glycemic index of 25, mesquite requires a longer time to digest then many grains. The digestive time for mesquite is to 4 to 6 hours unlike wheat which is digested in 1 to 2 hours. These factors result in a food that maintains a constant blood sugar for a sustained time and as a result prevents hunger & is safe for diabetics.”

Since this recipe is high in dates, diabetics will need to mindful as to the best time to enjoy these truffles.

Help! My family won’t eat healthy food!

This problem comes up so often with clients; I need to regularly address it. For some of you it will be the first time you’ve seen a solution. For others, it will come as a reminder.

So...what do you ‘do’ with a reluctant husband or partner and resistant children?

Here it comes...the answer you’ve been waiting for, the magic bullet, and the solution to all your nutritional headaches....nothing! Yes, that’s right: nothing. Well, not much anyway.

What, I think, you need to avoid is changing too much, too soon. In fairness to your partner and children, you’re the one who wants the healthier changes, not them. So take the softly, softly approach and go with what will work instead of force-feeding (pun intended) and creating a food war. Neither you nor your loved ones will gain anything except a rise in stress levels. Which I’m sure you’ll agree is not exactly healthy.

Here are some suggestions to ease the transition.

1. Raw pasta is first on my list. Over the years I have been a raw food consultant the vegetable Spiraliser has been a best seller. Go here to watch me demonstrate. The unit you’ll see is currently unavailable but there is another sturdier option. Go here to buy. You can get a lot of use out of this contraption. At this time of year, carrots are a good option and in the summer courgettes are brilliant. I also use mine to make spirals (not noodles) with roasting potatoes and baking in the oven.

World Cuisine Tri-Blade Plastic Spiral Vegetable Slicer
2. Use a raw or cooked dressing to go on the top of your raw pasta. I have an ebook with eight savoury dressings/sauces (and three sweet dressings – not for raw pasta). If they choose a cooked sauce, then bite your tongue and turn the other way; at least the noodles are a salad. Perhaps they’ll try a raw sauce another time.

3. Make a ‘Snowfreeze’ style ice cream with frozen bananas. All the texture and flavour of a fast-food bought one but none of the dodgy ingredients and near-empty nutrition. Peel, chop and freeze very ripe bananas, whizz with nut milk or dairy milk in a blender, add flavour: cacao, agave, vanilla. Or make it Lemon and Coconut, or Pineapple and Mango. Or make up your own flavour combination. Use the sweet sauces in my ebook for a topping.

If your family gradually accepts any or all of the above then you’ll be well on your way to improving their health. After they know that healthy food doesn’t have to be unpalatable they may well be willing to give some other foods a try, too.

Do what you can and be satisfied that you’re doing the best you can for now.

Be patient.

Go Team New Zealand

The Americas Cup races are taking up a dominant part of Kiwis lives at the moment.

My husband is watching the tacking and the mechanics of the sailing. I am looking at the crew scurrying back and forth across the ‘bouncy part’ that is the deck. (Can you tell I’m no boatie?) I can’t help wondering what food they are using to power the high demands of their bodies.

If I was part of the catering team I would make sure they had power smoothies as part of their carefully planned menu. It would include my personal favourites of green powder, maca powder and chia seeds. A few other important superfoods too (of course), but these babies could boost their energy a bit more and might make all the difference in the crew’s performance. Sometimes it’s about the extra split seconds that can make all the difference.

I hope their nutrition advisors know about maca and chia. If they’d asked me sooner I could’ve gone over. I wouldn’t have minded a last minute request; there would be some inconvenience but one does what is important for one’s country. San Fran looks nice.

Go Team New Zealand! Bring home the cup!

Smoothie Starter Pack contains maca, chia seeds and coconut oil. Get one here.

The Joy of Food Series continues with the Joy of Confidence next Saturday, 28th September. It includes superfoods - what and when to use them, making juices and smoothies for particular needs and philosophy v sensibility. Of course, there will be the eating/drinking of all we make.

You are very welcome to come even if this is your first raw food class.

Flaxseed; and Why They Are So Wonderful

Flaxseed Crackers have featured this week in our house, as I prepare for this Saturday’s raw food class. They pass the ‘David Test’ so they must be pretty good.

Flaxseed Crackers

These easy-to-use seeds are readily available, budget friendly and oh-so-very good for you.

Check this list out:
Alpha linolenic acid is an essential omega-3 fat that produces anti-inflammatory effects. Can be good for asthma, arthritis, and migraines.
Omega-3 fats help reduce the formation of blood clots
Omega-3 fats also keep cell membranes flexible
Flaxseeds also do an amazing job of helping to control cholesterol.
Flaxseeds also contain high quantities of lignans, which can protect against breast cancer in post-menopausal women.
Regular flaxseed intake has been shown to reduce dry eyes and minimize hot flashes.
They make a wonderful intestinal broom.

You can eat them whole but if you can grind some, your body will benefit with of the flaxseed’s nutrition being more available.

Sprinkle over salads, or use in flaxseed crackers (raw) or in your baking.

Use in your smoothie (grind first).

Flaxseed oil can be used as a salad dressing or in a recipe. For a really simple dressing, spray over a salad and sprinkle over a good salt (such as Himalayan) and freshly ground pepper.

Keep flaxseed oil in fridge as it is unstable. Use regularly, as this oil doesn’t store well once opened
.
There are still tickets available for this Saturday’s class – these amazing flaxseed crackers will be demonstrated. Also ‘starring’ kale chips, biscuits, muesli, raw pasta (with my famous Red Capsicum Vinaigrette) and Pad Thai. Co-starring ice cream and Raisin and Cinnamon Bread. Book here

Oh, and if you’re wondering what the ‘David Test’ is, that’s our son who’s not fond of a lot of raw. So if he gives the ‘thumbs up’, then I know I’m on to a good thing.

Everyone Wants To Be Healthier

If you’re tired, you want more energy.

If you’re sick, you want to get better – or at least, improve.

If you’re an athlete, you want better performance and recovery times.

If you’re overweight, you want to lose it.

And if you’re none of the above, I’ll wager you’d still like to be healthier!

Raw Nut and Raisin Chocolate
Learning the fundamentals of incorporating more raw food into your life gives you the food tools to optimize the possibilities that your food offers.

Wellness is one of the few assets or purchases in your life that doesn't require time to enjoy.

Once you have wellness you enjoy going to work (ideally!), you suffer less sickness; have energy to play with your children or grandchildren or even to pick them up. In short, having wellness adds enjoyment and satisfaction to all areas of life.

You might buy time-saving equipment (a ride-on mower), join a bike club, a season ticket to the rugby or ballet, or take a cruise. But all of these things have a limitation in your life. They all require time to enjoy.

Investing in your wellness to enhance your life does not take these chunks of time. This would include but not limited to, better food and drink, supplements, herbals, etc.

If you attend classes to equip your knowledge and empower you, they would be time efficient when you evaluate the long-term benefit they would bring.

Every time you ride your bike, sail in your boat or go to the theatre it takes the same amount of time as before. Plus the upkeep, which is more time and money.

Investing in your wellness is time well spent and an efficient use of time considering the potentially huge benefits. Once you have wellness, you have it. Very little time is required to keep it up or better it.

We have had one class in our Joy of Food Series and you are welcome to join us for any or all of the other three.

Joy of Food Series
They could be one of the most worthwhile investments you make. Invest in your wellness and it could pay you back.

Calories Don’t Count

Well, not like they used to.

Entire weight loss programs were designed around calories.

Whilst the simple maths of calories in your food, needing to be lower than calories required, works in principle for weight loss, it has some pit falls.

The main thing to think about is the quality of the calories you’re counting.

For example you might use up your ‘points’ choosing a pie for lunch, whereas choosing a nutrient-dense option with the same ‘points’ will serve your body’s nutritional requirements better.

Look for and make foods that pack the biggest nutritional punch and will nourish your body. As odd as it sounds you can be trim but unhealthy.

Where possible swap a traditional calorie laden food with a calorie laden good or better food.

Chocolate Cheesecake

For instance, a slice of raw cheesecake carries slightly more calories than a conventional one but to choose the raw option gives you quality with your quantity. In one serve of Chocolate Cheesecake you have healthy fats, fibre, essential minerals, vitamins, etc. It also delivers the satisfying creamy texture and the flavour generally meets expectations. It’s not exactly the same but it means that watching your weight doesn’t mean you miss out or have to buy a branded weight-conscious alternative with little genuine nutrition and probably containing colour, flavouring or artificial sweetener.

Oh, and the guilt…don’t we women have the most interesting relationship with food? Your raw slice of cheesecake is guilt-free if you cut yourself a polite-sized piece. Just because it’s raw, it doesn’t mean you can have as much as you want. A treat is a treat whether it’s a healthy version or not.

I think it is important to have some fat component with each meal but making sure the fats are a small feature and not the Main Event will mean you can eat a lot and never have to be hungry.

And you can achieve your weight loss goals.

If you’re a calorie counter can I encourage you to take into account the bigger picture? How is the food you’re about to eat going to serve your body?

There is more to life than calories!

In the raw food world so many of our foods are low in calories. Take advantage of it!

Now doesn’t that sound like you can have your cake and eat it, too?

Enroll in The Joy of Food Series and begin to experience the benefits!
The 'Joy of Food' Series start August 31, 2013

Replacement for Soy Sauce

I am not Best Friends with soy. Many of you know that already.

So what do I use instead of soy sauce? Up until recently I was using Bragg Liquid Aminos as it was one of the few brands I could find that used non-GE seed and was unfermented. I needed something to replace that very handy soy sauce taste. And lots of raw recipes call for it.

Coconut Secret, Raw Coconut Aminos, Soy-Free Seasoning Sauce

Another amino sauce (coconut based) has come my way and I’m very happy with it both as giving adequate flavour and not being soy.

The brand is Coconut Secret and comes in bottles of 237ml ($16.95). I have some ordered so will be carrying the stock in time for my raw food classes, The Joy of Food Series.

You can use it in cooked as well as your raw recipes.

Unless one is eating completely from scratch and sourcing only certified organic ingredients it is very difficult to avoid soy.

When I’m out I make an effort but don’t make a song-and-dance about it. But when I’m home I get to make the culinary decisions.

Soy has been accused of enough to make me more than hesitant to use it. Until science can unequivocally refute these, I choose to err on the side of caution.

The main complaint for me is the xeno-estrogens associated with soy. There are other issues, but even if this was the only one, it is enough for me.

There is no nutritional advantage in soy that cannot be supplied by another means.

This decision is right for me but as ever I can only suggest you do due diligence and put your research hat on. I wouldn’t like to think a client had changed their mind “because Christine said so.” Well, not for too long – so until you get the time and inclination to research, by all means, adopt my stance.

So once again, I am looking forward to Marinated Mushrooms.

For your enjoyment, here is the recipe:

1 cup or more of tasty mushrooms – Portabella are good if finances allow, otherwise Button mushrooms will do
1 – 2 T extra virgin olive oil
1 – 2 T coconut aminos
black pepper

Slice mushrooms, toss through the oil and aminos. Make sure mushrooms are well covered but not swimming in liquid. Scratch over some freshly ground black pepper and allow to marinate. These will be ready in half an hour but longer is better. But don’t let a sudden fancy of Marinated Mushrooms to stop you from a good idea. Make and serve immediately, if you have to!

Still yummy the next day.

Except for heat, these babies look very like their sautéed counterparts. In fact, considering that so much of our dinner has lost some heat by the time we eat it, no one may even notice that they’re eating something raw with their steak and tatties.

The Joy of Food Series of raw food classes are coming up soon. If you’ve been thinking about coming along, please head on over to here and register. If you’re not too sure, then you might have a question I can help with so that you can make a decision. If so, email or call me….I’m not very scary – really, I’m not.

Benefits of More Raw in Your Life

I started to form a list of the potential benefits of including more raw food in your eating. The list grew and grew.

In five minutes I listed the following without even trying very hard. I know if I gave it more thought and started to trawl through my other raw colleagues sites, I would be able to substantially increase the list.

The Joy of Food Series starting August 31
Looking at it, I admit surprise.

Each of these potential benefits I am familiar with but usually they are collected together in my mind in small groups. Seeing the large list I am truly astonished at all that can happen by simply adding more raw food to your day, every day.

It sounds naff, but there really is something here for everyone!

So here’s what I suggest you do. Read through this week's list and form a list of what is most important for you. Go through that list again and cull it to a short list of about 50 (just kidding); okay, about five.

This short list will become your reason to keep going when it all feels too hard or are tempted to fall off the wagon on a regular basis. It’s amazing what a bit of motivation can do when you see it translating to action.
You won’t have to argue with yourself anymore. Why? Because you have five very good, very big reasons that make it all worthwhile and you get results.

Bonus – the food tastes good.

Remember, these are potential benefits and not all are guaranteed. I know that you know that but you know I still have to say that. But I’ll still wager that you will experience quite a few!

The areas I listed them in were physical benefits, mental/emotional, relational, spiritual, business/wealth, environmental and ‘other’. This week will be the physical list as it’s all a bit much in one blog.

1. Physical
  • More energy
  • Weight loss
  • Weight gain
  • Potential healing or improvement in health
    a. Heart
    b. Diabetes
    c. Celiac
    d. Fibromyalgia
    e. Gut problems
    f. Candida
    g. Skin improvements
    h. Hormones
  • Allergies lessened or healed
  • Less sickness and disease
  • Better recovery after exercise
  • Improvement in exercise and sporting ability
  • Medication lessened or able to be stopped
  • Physical cleansing
  • Less sleep needed
  • Better sleep
  • Anti-aging (also mental)
  • Stronger hair and nails
  • Clearer skin and eyes

The Joy of Food Series is such a good investment if you want to experience the benefits of raw food. Pass this blog on to someone who needs to read it.

The Joy of Food

What is the difference between gluttony and enjoying your food?

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the Joy of Food. These two words don’t usually go together. I haven’t finished thinking about it yet but I wanted to tell you my thoughts so far.

If something tastes great then often it’s associated with guilt which is about as far away from joy as you can get. These days I prefer not to eat a food if I really don’t like it. I either find a way to prepare it so I like it or leave it out.

Often women (and some blokes) go on diets which inevitably equates with temporary misery only to be replaced by frustration when any weight loss is regained, plus a bit more.

Ah, the battles in our minds that we have become accustomed to over the years. Should I? No, I shouldn’t. Go on, no one will know. Okay. No. Well, just a little bit then….

But it’s never a ‘little bit’, is it?

Why do we do this to ourselves? Food is one of the great gifts in life. It could’ve been created for purposeful functionality only but it looks gorgeous, smells amazing, the texture so satisfying and the taste…sweet, juicy, crunchy, sour, salty, and so many more delicious adjectives.

The difference between indulging and relishing starts in our minds. At what point do you know when you've had enough and when the stage has been reached when more is too much?

I suggest you take a quiet moment and purposefully decide where the dividing line is for you at the moment.

It is hopeless for me to have a morning or afternoon tea/coffee without something to nibble on. It is part of my tradition and it feels wrong not to. Rather than change that habit, it is easier to change what I eat. A well chosen snack will give me energy instead of feeling tired, hungry and cranky. What can I eat that will serve my body and my mind?

I try to choose something that is ‘close to the earth’ most of the time. If I’m at a café this isn't usually an option. But that’s okay because it doesn't happen as often as my better choices do. A piece of cake with cream (of course) isn't going to ruin anything. Since they’re usually too big, what I need to learn is to leave some behind or take some home in a serviette. One of my children would see it wasn't wasted.

I propose that the expressions, “to die for”, “indulge” and “luxury” should be banned from foods. There is nothing immoral or wicked about cake and cream, ice cream and fudge sauce (raw or cooked) or hot chips, for that matter. Trim is not more virtuous than full fat and there are no bonus points for eating a plain boiled potato over a crunchy roasted one. Provided that you have sorted the balance, that is. Learning the difference between occasional and everyday foods is the key to freeing yourself to experience joy without guilt in your eating and drinking.

I have found the balance that is right for me with raw and cooked foods. If you’d like to talk this through or want me to help you plan how to achieve this blissful balance, book a Raw Foundations session with me.

Bring back the Joy of Food to your life!

The Science of Raw and Healthy

For those of you who wonder about the science of healthy eating, rather than just opinion of website owners, these links may make useful reading for you.

Perhaps you need to reassure yourself (when the going gets tough) or you have concerned friends and relatives worried about you. Why folk worry when you give up processed food for fresh, I’ll never know.

That should keep you busy for a while.

Keep the links handy; you never know when you might need to remind yourself or send on to a caring friend. some folk need science to convince rather than those closest to them. I don’t mind; whatever it takes for someone I care about to have their eyes opened and the opportunity to improve their health.

Hint: strongly resist the temptation to say’ “I told you so!”

Remember a couple of weeks ago I said I’d listened to an interview with the creator of InLiven and Fast Tract (Probiotic)? Well, here is the interview. It is slightly longer than an hour in length so if you don’t have a chunk of time, then break it up into tea/coffee/herbal break sizes of 15 mins each. Or if you’re really clever, download so you can play it in your car (I’m not this clever; I’m dependent on children – pathetic, really).

I hope it gives you the “Ah, ha!” moment. You can order via the  www.gomoreraw.com shop, or go to www.christinesmith.mionegroup.com. These can be delivered almost anywhere in the world.

Natural Remedies for Coughs and Colds

Are you looking for a natural remedy for coughs and colds in your household?

I can recommend these from the experience of what our household has had over the last week or so. A couple of my dearly beloveds had need of remedies.

One came down with the thick head and tell-tale sore throat that usually precedes a cold that lasts two weeks. The other,  a pesky cold-then-cough that creates general discomfort, a sandpaper nose and much coughing when people are trying to sleep. You know how it is.

The two-weeker turned into a three dayer; call it co-incidence if you wish but since one can’t time-travel and reset to compare results, I am going with the assumption that the ViroGone from Artemis actually helped. Naturally, I plied the Significant Other with fresh juices, lots of water and good food. But really and truly the recovery has never been as quick as this. Definite thumbs up and this product earned a place in the Go More Raw Web shop.

Although the second Case History coughed and filled copious tissues, she has recovered remarkably quicker than I am accustomed to. (Remember we’ve had five children with our fair share of viruses to observe over the years).  Actually, the amount of nose-emptying (sorry) was exactly what the Chest Relief was supposed to do.

I commend both of these products to your natural remedy approach for you and your family this winter.
These are on special in our shop until stock runs out.

Artemis Chest Relief, $31.85 (rrp $51.00)

Artemis ViroGone, $37.40 (rrp $60.00)

Don’t forget our Starter Packs: the Smoothie Pack will make 25 – 40/50 smoothies and the Sweet Treats #2 a minimum of 10 batches (give or take; really depends on how many Cherries and if you use them each time).

My last comment for the week: “25% of what we eat keeps us alive, 75% keeps our doctors alive.”

Apparently this is an Egyptian proverb. Whether or not the ratios are true for your life or not, it is still a proverb worth considering for our food choices.

Choose well, and enjoy your food!

Other Things I Like

You and I probably have a few things in common. Those drawn to a way of life usually share similar interests. Of course, there will be aspects of your life that aren’t in mine and vice versa. And that’s a good thing because we are unique and make our own choices for our priorities.

For instance, the chances are very good that a fair number of you like to garden, choose free range chicken and eggs, recycle/reuse and read the labels on groceries to see if MSG lurks in its many disguises.

Frugal living is something that I enjoy. Over the years I have got books out of the library that tell me how to save money, and/or time (you usually trade off one for the other), teach me how to mend or refashion, prepare food that sustains my family as well as my purse.

Since my early family-raising days the internet has now taken over for accessibility and speed. Although I don’t think I will ever get sick of the satisfaction of turning pages of a real book.

I subscribe to blogs* and sites that inspire me and reassure me that I’m not really crazy and even if I am there are so many others crazier than me that I’m never going to be lonely.

I love learning from other people, and gaining wisdom to better equip me. Much of what I now know I wish I knew in my very early days of raising a family, although I am told I was a sandal wearer way back then. Apparently I am now a veteran hippy but my version wears make-up, colours the encroaching grey hairs and loves colourful clothes and earrings.

Today I made a laundry powder instead of the normal liquid one I usually make (actually, I've bought natural ones for the last couple of months as my time priorities lay elsewhere). I don’t pretend to have made up the recipe** and there are plenty of similar versions on the ‘net.

Here’s the one I used:

2 cups Lux flakes
1 cup borax
1 cup washing soda
1 cup baking soda

Blend everything in the food processor. My contribution to the recipe was the addition of 10 drops of peppermint oil. One tablespoon per normal sized wash is all you need. A cold water wash is fine although the washing will benefit by agitating for part of the first cycle and ‘pausing’ for a few hours or overnight. Restart in the morning and let machine finish cycle. The extra soak improves the lifting out of dirt and a better result. It also means you can experiment with using less powder and so save a bit more money.

I could talk about many other things that you might share as interests such as parenting, slow living, DIY, knitting, repurposing, herbal remedies, etc, etc. Another day, perhaps.

BTW For those of you in Auckland the Green Living Expo is on this weekend at the Show Grounds. I’m looking forward to it. www.organicexpo.co.nz

I found this recipe* on is www.soulemama.com

Probiotics: sorting the best from the rest

It is quite likely you’ve noticed “probiotics”, “healthy gut” and “good bacteria” in media. There’s even a TV commercial with funny blue blobs fighting on a seesaw to demonstrate that gut balance is important.

A healthy gut is very important. Did you know that 85% of your immune system lives in your gut?

It is in your interests to understand this as well as you can so you can make an informed choice. (Oh, and your animals will do well on this, too.) Our elderly cat bounced back after an abscess and anti-biotics.

But how do you tell which is a good brand to buy? There are so many to choose from. Each bottle or jar brandishing impressive stats, claims and big numbers all vying to convince you to spend your dollars on their product.

Last week I listened to a webcast about the probiotic InLiven and Fast Tract.

I’m passing on some of my gleanings to help you sort the wheat from the chaff.

1. Is the product certified organic? This is a quality assurance that raw materials are of the best quality. Most other products on the market don’t qualify.

2. Are there prebiotics present? These are needed in a probiotic as food to feed the bacteria. The bacteria need to be fed.

3. Is it a viable probiotic? Is it a living culture and not dead bodies? InLiven’s bacteria are grown in their own labs from grain, fruit and vegetables. Believe it or not, some probiotics are created from faecal matter. Not nice.

Does it have the ability to on-ferment? Can it raise bread or make sauerkraut? InLiven and Fast Tract can do this.

At least 12 are needed preferably 13 (to properly balance the gut).

The bacteria in InLiven and Fast Tract have been evolved (or stressed) to create strength. The strongest ones only are harvested and then re-stressed. This has been done over and again until resulting in highly evolved strains resistant to ascorbic acids and chlorine.

Note that bacteria counts and large numbers are there to confuse and convince that more is better. The label won’t tell you if the bacteria are alive or dead. Probiotics must be living. Counts don’t matter.

4. Are they fermented? Probably the most important thing aspect of InLiven. This is a three week process for each batch. The company is not aware of any other supplier that does this. Fermentation preserves the food that feeds the bacteria and is a natural preservative. Fermentation improves digestibility, increases enzyme content and is easier to assimilate.

So there you go. Use this list to rate your own probiotic, if you use one.

If you have questions, email me. I have my own success story and those of others including nailing candida, dealing with adult acne and, improving the immune system of a young man to such an extent that both he and his mother are amazed. I love success stories.

To buy, either order on our site or contact me.
