Go Team New Zealand

The Americas Cup races are taking up a dominant part of Kiwis lives at the moment.

My husband is watching the tacking and the mechanics of the sailing. I am looking at the crew scurrying back and forth across the ‘bouncy part’ that is the deck. (Can you tell I’m no boatie?) I can’t help wondering what food they are using to power the high demands of their bodies.

If I was part of the catering team I would make sure they had power smoothies as part of their carefully planned menu. It would include my personal favourites of green powder, maca powder and chia seeds. A few other important superfoods too (of course), but these babies could boost their energy a bit more and might make all the difference in the crew’s performance. Sometimes it’s about the extra split seconds that can make all the difference.

I hope their nutrition advisors know about maca and chia. If they’d asked me sooner I could’ve gone over. I wouldn’t have minded a last minute request; there would be some inconvenience but one does what is important for one’s country. San Fran looks nice.

Go Team New Zealand! Bring home the cup!

Smoothie Starter Pack contains maca, chia seeds and coconut oil. Get one here.

The Joy of Food Series continues with the Joy of Confidence next Saturday, 28th September. It includes superfoods - what and when to use them, making juices and smoothies for particular needs and philosophy v sensibility. Of course, there will be the eating/drinking of all we make.

You are very welcome to come even if this is your first raw food class.

Flaxseed; and Why They Are So Wonderful

Flaxseed Crackers have featured this week in our house, as I prepare for this Saturday’s raw food class. They pass the ‘David Test’ so they must be pretty good.

Flaxseed Crackers

These easy-to-use seeds are readily available, budget friendly and oh-so-very good for you.

Check this list out:
Alpha linolenic acid is an essential omega-3 fat that produces anti-inflammatory effects. Can be good for asthma, arthritis, and migraines.
Omega-3 fats help reduce the formation of blood clots
Omega-3 fats also keep cell membranes flexible
Flaxseeds also do an amazing job of helping to control cholesterol.
Flaxseeds also contain high quantities of lignans, which can protect against breast cancer in post-menopausal women.
Regular flaxseed intake has been shown to reduce dry eyes and minimize hot flashes.
They make a wonderful intestinal broom.

You can eat them whole but if you can grind some, your body will benefit with of the flaxseed’s nutrition being more available.

Sprinkle over salads, or use in flaxseed crackers (raw) or in your baking.

Use in your smoothie (grind first).

Flaxseed oil can be used as a salad dressing or in a recipe. For a really simple dressing, spray over a salad and sprinkle over a good salt (such as Himalayan) and freshly ground pepper.

Keep flaxseed oil in fridge as it is unstable. Use regularly, as this oil doesn’t store well once opened
.
There are still tickets available for this Saturday’s class – these amazing flaxseed crackers will be demonstrated. Also ‘starring’ kale chips, biscuits, muesli, raw pasta (with my famous Red Capsicum Vinaigrette) and Pad Thai. Co-starring ice cream and Raisin and Cinnamon Bread. Book here

Oh, and if you’re wondering what the ‘David Test’ is, that’s our son who’s not fond of a lot of raw. So if he gives the ‘thumbs up’, then I know I’m on to a good thing.

Everyone Wants To Be Healthier

If you’re tired, you want more energy.

If you’re sick, you want to get better – or at least, improve.

If you’re an athlete, you want better performance and recovery times.

If you’re overweight, you want to lose it.

And if you’re none of the above, I’ll wager you’d still like to be healthier!

Raw Nut and Raisin Chocolate
Learning the fundamentals of incorporating more raw food into your life gives you the food tools to optimize the possibilities that your food offers.

Wellness is one of the few assets or purchases in your life that doesn't require time to enjoy.

Once you have wellness you enjoy going to work (ideally!), you suffer less sickness; have energy to play with your children or grandchildren or even to pick them up. In short, having wellness adds enjoyment and satisfaction to all areas of life.

You might buy time-saving equipment (a ride-on mower), join a bike club, a season ticket to the rugby or ballet, or take a cruise. But all of these things have a limitation in your life. They all require time to enjoy.

Investing in your wellness to enhance your life does not take these chunks of time. This would include but not limited to, better food and drink, supplements, herbals, etc.

If you attend classes to equip your knowledge and empower you, they would be time efficient when you evaluate the long-term benefit they would bring.

Every time you ride your bike, sail in your boat or go to the theatre it takes the same amount of time as before. Plus the upkeep, which is more time and money.

Investing in your wellness is time well spent and an efficient use of time considering the potentially huge benefits. Once you have wellness, you have it. Very little time is required to keep it up or better it.

We have had one class in our Joy of Food Series and you are welcome to join us for any or all of the other three.

Joy of Food Series
They could be one of the most worthwhile investments you make. Invest in your wellness and it could pay you back.
